Ever wonder why there are just short of 500 municipalities in Maine? It's a link back to our colonial heritage, where the American colonists rebelled against the tyranny of the British monarchy and sought to limit the impact of "big government" on their lives. Mainers love local control.
The merger proponents are all about growing the size of government. When is the last time you saw government shrinking in cost? Expanding government, which is what a merged Lewiston-Auburn would be, is a fertile ground for those less honorable who seek to take personal gain out of government. Citizens must always be vigilant, and ferret out corruption at every opportunity.
Don't give corruption a larger platform to operate on. Vote no on the Consolidation Plan.
